At our Adventure Racing Academy, some of the leading Adventure Racers in the world will teach you everything you need to know about Adventure Racing. Safety is always a priority, and maximum individual attention is our goal.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN: We will train you on the following skills:- Using a compass and Adventure Racing UTM plotter
- Advanced map reading
- Orienteering at night
- Navigating in various weather conditions
- Select, inspect, wear and care for your mountaineering gear
- Proper rappel technique, from hooking up to proper body position
- Perform self arrest, recovery, and self rescue.
- Proper ascending techniques and fluid energy application.
- Do a main line exchange while ascending.
- Proper top rope blundering/climbing technique.
- Select your climbing route, proper commands, hand holds, and proper belay technique.
- Bowline, figure 8, prussic and square knot.
- Characteristics of various boats, paddles, and PFDs
- Wilderness boat repair
- How to properly read river currents
- Paddle strokes: the power stroke, sweep stroke, draw stroke, and back stroke
- Proper river rescue techniques and rescue throw line applications
- Self rescue and boat recovery
- Aggressively swim in white water
- How to improve paddling endurance
- Properly select, maintain, and inspect your mountain bike and gear
- Wilderness bike repair
- Technical riding skills
- Navigate obstacles, the ready attack position, powering through turns, and more
- Proper climbing and descending technique
- Push or towing teammates
- Orienteering while biking
- How to determine which paths/routes to take
- How to avoid dangers
- General wilderness safety
PROFESSIONAL INTRUCTORS: We have a great group of highly experienced guest instructors.
- Chris Caul is a mountaineering expert and was Primal Quest’s course designer/director.
- Kristen Dieffenbach has tons of experience in both expedition racing and ultra events and has a PhD in Exercise and Sport Science as well as Sport Psychology.
- Toby Angove has been a leader in the Adventure Racing community for over 10 years.
- Kristin Eddy is a World Class marathon and ultra runner, as well as an expert in packing and planning for Adventure Races.
- Julia Pollock is an all-around pro in AR, specializing in paddling techniques and navigation.
- Doug Crytzer is one of the top race producers in AR, having a wide range of experience in all aspects of Adventure Racing.
